Thanks to its extraordinary landscapes, interesting geomorphology, long indented coastline and extremely rich marine biocenoses ecosystem, the larger part of the Kornati sea was declared a national park in 1980.

Today, the "Kornati” national park occupies around 220 km2 including 89 islets and cliffs with approximately 238 km of coastline. Even though it encompasses a relatively large number of islands, they occupy less than ¼ of the area, with the other ¾ comprising the marine ecosystem.
